SwissCo Services AG, Sisseln (Switzerland)

New chiller with communicative PR actuator - Reliability, security and energy efficiency achieved with Belimo

A reliable cooling circuit is particularly important for the pharmaceutical company SwissCo Services AG in Sisseln (CH). The temperature and above all the humidity in the production plants are decisive for manufacturing the company's effervescent and tablet products. Alongside reliable operation and keeping temperature and humidity levels constant, the aim of refurbishing the cooling plant was to optimise energy consumption.

Belimo Energy Valve™ at Land O'Lakes, Inc., Minnesota

Belimo Energy Valve Plays Integral Role in Land O’ Lakes, Inc.’s Corporate Facility Upgrade

Land O’ Lakes, Inc.’s Corporate Sustainability Group began making plans to upgrade the facilities in order to increase efficiency and reduce energy consumption. HVAC systems were a particular area of focus due to the fact that as the buildings aged, they became more difficult to cool and meet desired discharge air temperature set points (especially in the summer months). Improving occupant comfort was also a priority.

After conducting a thorough review of piping, valves, and instrumentation, officials concluded that in order to solve the problem, various infrastructural improvements would have to be made. They then began the process of searching for a solution, which eventually led them to the Belimo Energy Valve™.

Sport & Family Swimming Pool DonauSplash, Tulln (Austria)

Measuring, controlling, balancing and shutting with a single valve unit

The DonauSplash indoor swimming pool in Tulln, which was originally constructed in 1974, was reopened after almost a year and a half of general renovation in October 2014. The entire building technology was updated as part of the general renovation and a conversion from natural gas to biomass district heating was implemented. Efficient utilisation of energy was the motto of the building technology consulting engineers – after all, the heating output is about 500 kW. About 30 m³ of water is moved every hour in order to control the temperature of the individual bathing zones. The electronically controlled Electronic Pressure-Independent Valve (EPIV) from Belimo provides a tight seal in order to prevent energy losses in the water circuits, and increases efficiency during planning, implementation and operation.

Energy efficiency through transparent system monitoring

The Belimo products “Energy Valve” and the room controller “CR24-B1” were the protagonists of a Macedonian pilot project in Skopje for the determination of the energy efficiency of buildings. The experimental set-up at the Institute of Forestry was able to demonstrate that, with the implementation of meaningful renovation measures, the consumption of primary energy could be reduced by 20 percent by the year 2020 in comparison with the expectations projected for 2007 — as outlined by the 2012/27/EU Directive. Thanks to the Belimo Energy Valve™ also the current energy consumption values and the optimisation potential of the system are known at all times.

Hillsdale College

Belimo Energy Valve Helps Hillsdale College Meet Strategic Energy Goals

Hillsdale’s Energy Department implemented an energy management program in an effort to reduce the costs associated with providing utility services to the campus. The primary goal of the plan was to help the college absorb potential utility rate hikes while avoiding the need to increase its utility budget as both newly constructed and renovated facilities were completed and became occupied. After roughly a year and a half of trying to achieve savings, the college’s Energy Department examined the operation of their HVAC systems and related mechanical equipment to identify areas where more substantial savings could be achieved through both system optimization and various infrastructural improvements.

Belimo’s EF Spring Return Actuators Serve as Economical Alternative to MS41xx Series Actuators

During the replacement process, a number of different actuators were examined and after careful consideration the decision was made to replace the failing units with Belimo’s EFX120-S N4 spring return actuators. In addition to having a NEMA-4 rating, Belimo’s EF actuators offered higher torque (270 in-lbs) in a single direct-coupled unit, and because of this, only 150 actuators were required to do the work that the 250 MS41xx units originally did (one EF unit can effectively operate a 66 sq ft damper). The cost for the more robust EF actuators was almost equal to the cost of ordering 250 M-Series actuators.

Pressure Independent Control Valves Meet Challenges of Variable Primary System

Variable primary chilled water systems can be a cost effective alternative to standard primary/secondary systems and are becoming more commonplace for that reason. At the same time, these systems are often more challenging to control. In designing a variable primary system for the new Department of Transportation (DOT) headquarters in Washington D.C., the design firm of DMJM in Arlington, Virginia, met this challenge with pressure independent control valves.

Eglin Air Force Base

Southland Industries Discovers Labor-Saving Value of New Linkage Technology at Fort Belvoir Hospital

Pressure independent valve technology played a key role in a major Utility Energy Service Contract (UESC)Project at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. The project, completed in late 2006, included the conversion of a chilled water plant, known as Building 42, to variable flow. The conversion helped the plant and the buildings that it serves meet the requirements outlined in the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and has also resulted in significant energy savings. The installation of 62 Belimo pressure independent characterized control valves (PICCV) helped pave the way for a smooth transition to variable flow, ensuring that the base will continue to enjoy worry-free energy savings for years to come.

Southland Industries Discovers Labor-Saving Value of New Linkage Technology at Fort Belvoir Hospital

Andy Cummings of Southland Industries has suffered through his share of cumbersome damper actuator installs. With over 30 years of experience in the sheet metal industry, he knows that the process is not only time consuming, it can yield disappointing results if the connections are in any way unstable. Damper blades can become twisted or bent, linkages can bend or even break, etc. Meanwhile, the last thing a busy design, build and maintenance firm like Southland Industries wants is to revisit a failed installation that was already labor intensive to begin with!

MIT Tests New Energy Valve Technology at Charles Hayden Library And Reaps the Rewards of Higher Delta-T!

Low Delta-T Syndrome is a common (and costly) problem in many large facilities, especially on sprawling campuses with central chilled water plants. This was and still is the case at The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). But the problem isn’t as bad as it use to be. Facility engineers within the University’s Sustainability and Utility Planning are now optimistic that it will continue to improve. This is in thanks to new valve technology from Belimo that was applied to MIT’s Charles Hayden Library as a beta test for a new Belimo product – the Belimo Energy Valve™. Pressure Independent Valves Make Cost Effective Alternative to Reverse Return System for US Census Bureau

It was right there in black and white. Paraphrased, the guideline stated that pump and piping systems shall be arranged in a reverse return configuration. The standard is part of the GSA’s (US General Service Administration) design guide, known as the PBS-P100, and serves as the guideline for all US governmental buildings. However to all rules, there are at least one or two exceptions. Such was the case with the new US Census Bureau headquarters located in Suitland, Maryland. The 8-story, 1.5 million sq. ft. facility, scheduled to be completed in October 2006, simply was not a good candidate for the use of reverse return for all systems.
